The dream is obviously that Kanye will see it, love it, and then hire me as his choreographer/one of his dancers and then pay me a million dollars.
Anyway, the entire project was an attempt to turn a mirror to America in terms of the way we view people and situations. It wasn't an easy thing to do but I certainly think I did good work on some of it. The thing is, I put up a few purposeful obstacles for myself and that ended up really working in my favor. I generally don't ever dance to artists like Kane West; I have never really choreographed for people who aren't me and, for the most part, people who aren't dancers; and I have never been in charge of this many people before in terms of an artistic endeavor. Regardless, I think my team and I tackled the show, the "subject," and the aesthetics pretty fucking well. All shows were sold out, and during the final performance people pulled our used tickets out of the garbage to try to sneak in--it didn't work out well for them. Because of fire code. Fuck yeah, me (though lets be real, I had a pretty massive panic attack during the last performance. Because the garbage ticket douchebags would not fucking leave).
I will have the video up soon, but for now here are a few pictures of my stunning cast in performance. None of the photos have been edited, so yes. That is the real lighting. BAM.

But lets be real. Only like, two people check anyway. Regardless, my next move will be to post the video of the 30 minute long dance theater piece I created this semester. To all Kanye West music. It's pretty baller. But what do I know...?
The answer to the question "where am I" is basically nowhere. Not like Beatles nowhere but waving back and forth on various spectrums nowhere. So I guess also everywhere.

That's all I've got for now. Finals week. Woo.
Om Shanti.Violeusehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03877838883038897817noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-693249992759377794.post-73753660008104529152013-05-22T00:37:00.002-07:002013-05-22T00:37:25.813-07:00The House with the Unlocked DoorSlipping over
Dreaming in doubles
Washing out the blue that stained the sheets
Outside the house with the unlocked door
Evening sun drying sweet rings of red wine
A table glowing in moontime
White dress caught
On the fence by the house with the unlocked door
Rose water lips greet you like glory
A love like where the slime meets the sand
Rise up and out of the dust-light
On the floor of the house with the unlocked door
Braided petals into roots, braided roots into earth
Hiding webs in the house with the unlocked door
However, since this blog is 99.999% for me since, I'm fine with that.
Lots of changes happening. Lots of shifts in...well, all the energy around my world seems to be novel. The atoms are buzzing faster, and it's not just the weather. The past few days I've had a lot of time to myself to think about who I am on my way to become. It's strange-- when so much is changing around you, you realize that you must change too, whether you think you can or can't, whether you want to or not.
So now, I'm listening to Jeff Buckley's cover of Hallelujah (the original is by the beautifully melancholy Leonard Cohen)... Something about this progression of chords with Jeff's voice just... makes me ache. And it makes sense with what I'm beginning to realize about myself which is not only that I have to change, but that I have to change NOW. And I have to take active steps in pursuing that goal...drag myself out of this rut, reverse this black hole in my chest that has been twisting me halfway to nothing pulling all of my loved ones under as well.

I don't know. These lyrics kill me. They're so applicable to... so many things:

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah,
Hallelujah.

In other news, I just finished a show that was [very loosely] based on The Bacchae. It's immersive theater that takes place in a cult/rave. Here's a small still of me from our promo:

That's all for now.

So Rihanna's got this new music video for her song Stay, which features Mikky Ekko (a singer/songwriter from Louisiana). Ekko actually co-wrote the song with Justin Parker, who writes songs for a few popular female artists. I've always felt kind of weird about musicians who don't write their own music, but then, I understand how difficult it is to write a song that you can really consider "good."

The video for Stay is really striking to me for a number of reasons, most importantly its simplicity. The entire video is literally just Rihanna's pretty self sitting/lying in a bathtub full of cloudy water. She's more or less makeup-less, and there has been no attempt to cover up any tattoos or beauty marks. It's unrefined to the point that you can see the pores on her skin, which is a refreshing step forward in terms of music video quality—at least in my eyes. It's really beautiful to look at this human form, especially from the perspective of art and beauty and appreciation for the female body.

There is so little effort put in by Rihanna to make this video "shine" out amongst the thousands and thousands of high quality music videos we are surrounded by today, and rather than being annoyed or frustrated by this, her effortlessness is actually really stunning. Instead of lip syncing the whole song, there are moments when it seems like she can't even bring herself to mouth the words at all (in fact, a lot of the time she doesn't).

The camera pans the span of her body, glossing over her tattoos, the contours, the murky water... I hate to say this, but it's pretty evocative on its own. My criticisms (or critiques, rather) lie in the introduction of Mikky Ekko. I mean, his voice is great and lovely and nice in the song itself, but I sort of didn't want him to be in the video. It created this weird and possibly unwanted juxtaposition between the beautiful, dark, sultry, naked, bathtub-laying Rihanna and this fully clothed, standing, curly-haired unknown. If he had to be in the video, I feel like it could have been done more tastefully (for lack of a better word). Or with more poise. I don't know. That's just me.
My only other criticism is that at the very end, Rihanna squeezes out one simple tear. I just. Agh. As an actor, in acting school... too much "actiness." Just too much. Maybe it's pretentious for me to say that, but then again, it's not. It's just honest. I know it's just one tear and it's cute and heartbreaking but I just don't think it was necessary to convey the "feeling" of the lyrics and of the melody. It was already there. But otherwise, I thought it was a really lovely video.

Hopefully for a while now. It's been a busy life. Anyway. it's NYC Fashion Week!
So far out of all the lines I've seen, I'm super impressed with Kenneth Cole's line. Perhaps it's because I'm so much of a New Yorker, but his lines were SO so crisp and clean and interesting to look at. It's haute-entrepreneur. Check these out:
Academy of Art University's "Line" was really great too, at least from what I saw. There was a really nice blend of eclectic layers and simple monochromes:
In other news, I'm currently working on 2 projects in my acting studio. I'm going to finally try posting more often, and hopefully soon I can get some personal style photos up in here.
This summer I'll be working towards my Yoga teacher certification and hopefully I'll secure an internship somewhere interesting.
Namaste.

This has been the most stressful two months of my life. Great. If I don't find time to post soon, I will absolutely post (often) over winter break. Life is hectic in the city that never sleeps. Especially after this whole Sandy debacle. Actually, no, Sandy was a break compared to everything else. Actually, no, it put everything I am currently working on WAY behind schedule. Which is not good.
In other news: A dance piece I was in just finished its run last weekend and got an excellent review in the NYT both online and on paper (I'm in a photograph in the print version. Barely noticeable, but it's me). I will be in another gorgeous play at the end of the month called Aunt Leaf, and I am "choreographing" an opening to a version of Riders To The Sea that goes up this week.
I guess not posting for so long was a horrible idea in terms of getting my blog noticed and picking up followers, but you gotta live outside of the little internet box, don't you?

Also, it's 5:20 in the morning. I work up an hour and 20 minutes ago. The past few weeks of summer have seriously been dragging. I've been in NYC more or less all summer, but it feels like I'm "moving back." New York is New York , but uptown (where I've lived the past month or two) feels so much less like home than downtown. I feel at home in the Village.
Lately, a revived gothic style has entered into my fancy, and though I've posted about blacks before, I honestly can't get enough. I find myself getting frustrated lately that I can't find a black blouse to fit a black maxi skirt, that I don't have enough boxy, dark accessories, that I'm in dire need of black skinny pants, and that my creepers are in serious need of repair.

the dark shadow and lips against pale skin just make the quasi-macabre accessories (like the crow neckpiece and the fishnet gloves) glow.

the dark and patterned bodycon dress here creates a lengthening effect. The model's long, dark hair adds a mystery to the look, while the tapered nature of the dress creates an air of class.

The length of this dress makes the model look like a waiflike vampy queen. the black fur on the dress and on her long gloves compete with her wildly teased hair for a seductive and yet precious look.

this style is more low key. The matted hair and calm leather add a strange curiosity to the ensemble.

here, the simple, even ragged dress calls for minimalistic jewelry. The entire look seems to reek of being 'lost' in that beautiful way.

I love this suit of armor/metal. It's a true tribute to gothism. The sharpness, the metallic nature of this piece-- it's both beautiful, strong. It seems as though the veil hold so much power.

the lines in this look make up its style. It's angular, sharp, crisp, clean. It's monotone in the most agreeable way.

this lingerie is to die for. That's honestly all I have to say.

the hood in this look seriously adds so much. It completes the outfit.

incredible, McQueen and/or Jeffrey-Campbell-esque shoes.

Ok. it's late. Please enjoy this. I hope you do. I'm trying to get more viewers and followers here. I really want this blog to take off. I'm starting to realize that working in the fashion media industry seems like a great idea for me. Anyway. That's all for now.

I'm not sure how the following system actually works on blogspot, so if anyone reads this and knows, please tell me!
here's the bloglovin' link: FOLLOW ME HERE :]
I think I'm finally picking up speed with this thing, and as soon as the school year starts, I will be posting personal style entries.
Next subject: after spending the majority of my summer dancing and then sitting on the couch watching netflix like an asshole, I decided to start reading and reading and reading. I found that I've really, really missed it. My taste in books is generally snobby, and as much as I hate that, I can't stand bad literature. I can't read a book unless the sentences are structured well and are, well, beautiful to say. I have a list of 23 books I want to read, 3 of which I've finished in the past 3 days. here is a condensed list:

-The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime (simply a beautiful book)- read
-Fahrenheit 451 (also excellent, and shockingly resonant of our present)
-1984 (More post- apocalypse/censored society stuff, also great)- currently reading
-Ishmael (by Daniel Quinn)
-Story of B (D. Quinn)
-The Elegant Universe
-Never Let Me Go (Yes, I've seen the film)
-Clockwork Orange (Yes, I've seen the film)
-Naked Lunch
-American Pastoral
-Cat's Cradle
-House of Leaves
-Brave New World
-The Tibetan Book of the Dead
-Be Here Now

I highly recommend the books I've read on this list and I probably will highly recommend all the others, too.
If you're wondering what my favorite novels are, a short list in no particular order:

-Slaughterhouse 5 (Vonnegut)
-The Handmaid's Tale (Atwood)
-The Great Gatsby (Fitzgerald)
-The Remains of the Day [which is dull at first but the ending makes it worth everything] (Ishiguro)
-Pride and Prejudice (Austen)
-The Gurnsey Literary and Potato-Peel Pie Society [excellent epistolary novel] (Shaffer)
-Jitterbug Perfume (Robbins)
-The Bell Jar (Plath)

Alright. I'm done being boring. But I don't want to go without a picture of some sort, so here's REAL LIFE NYAN CAT:
Aside from being wildly interesting to look at for some reason, the petite (5'4", I believe) beauty glows with "weirdness." And it suits her incredibly well:
I particularly like the touch of red shadow she sweeps under her eyes-- it makes her look really ill. Or very tired. Or over caffeinated. It's pretty bomb. I guess it's her signature look. As messed up as it is, I think that her waify/sick/weird aesthetic is a huge marketing tool for her-- that's how she brands herself. As an actor (or a performer at all...) you learn that in the industry, consistency is key. You walk into a room and you are you are you are you--it won't take long for people to recognize you. I hate having to play in to human consumerism and the marketing of the self (which frankly is another form of obliterating the self), but it is what it is... You brand yourself, you say "this is me; this is always me."
Honestly, I think it's a good life lesson. Find who you are and be that person.
Damn. Thank you, Eriko Nakao, for letting me get all deep n' shit!

I've been able to capture some of the gorgeous flora and fauna that we grow around our property:

Story time: When it comes to style, I was against floral patterns or colors for a long time. But the truth is, they add a sweetness to an edgy or otherwise dark look, and I love that:

It turns out that for both men and women, hints (or full blasts) of florals can be really arresting. They have the ability to soften or sharpen any style, when paired with the right components. Alas, this is all I have for now.

The summer heat is intensifying my usual color palate, I guess. Instead of dressing in stars and stripes on the fourth, I tackled bright yellows and pinks and greens. Recent additions to my wardrobe and items I fancy:
My Fourth of July celebration ended in a boat trip up long island sound to see fireworks that seemed to be set off no more than 200-300 yards away from us. Then we got caught in the most terrifying (but beautiful) lightening storm I have ever seen. It's pretty wild seeing lightening strike the ground and water so close to you. Though at the time I was panicking, to say the least. Happy to be back on shore.

Of the many ink styles out there, I have fallen in love with the white-ink tattoo. They're really quite beautiful, discreet, and tasteful. I do not think my next adornment will be a white piece, but I'm sure I will get one at some point.

really quite stunning actually. There weren't many good photos of white ink that I feel like I can call "art" (which is what I think tattoos essentially should be), but I will leave you with these.
And dear God, do I wish I was a serious part of it. I loved a lot of the trends, especially the brocades, the leather (I hate how good it looks), Blanket Coats, and the white-out whites.
Some of my favorites from general fall/winter lines:

1. Rick Owens. He claims 'Brutalism' this season. It's earthy, it's primal, it's visceral. It's a mouthful. It's savory. I don't think I like that I love it. But I love it. Especially that veil. I found a nice short video of him explaining himself. I very much enjoy-- I hope you do, too: Rick Owens!

2. Thierry Mugler. I love how dramatic Mugler is famed to be. I've always felt that the line has had a theatrical flair--Even Mugler's muse, Rick Genest (Zombie Boy), is a spectacle in himself. Nicola Formichetti has taken over for a little over a year, and the bold lines and cut outs make for a futuristic-streamlined-chic. It's bold, it's complex, it's seriously textured. Awesome.
3. Anthony Vaccarello. I hadn't heard of this designer until Jan/Feb, but his f/w collection is great. Super asymetrical, super body-con and fitted, lots of satin, emeralds, navys, etc. I would love to wear any of these pieces. Glamorous, cool, and so silky it's almost liquid. Lovely.

4. Jil Sander. Raf Simons's last show was beautiful-- stark white walls and floors plated gorgeous flowers in glass cases. It was like an art exhibit-- it was an art exhibit. Lots of pastels and bright colors, with a slightly nostalgic air to every piece-- and yet, each piece also came with its own edginess. The oversized coats gave off a sweetness that somehow reminds me of Audrey Hepburn. The dresses are all either fitted or seem to spill over the form, and it's quite beautiful.(click to see full picture)

When it comes to style, shestill retains much of her NYC business-esque class (minus a few classic 90's articles). When I was little, she would always tell me that black would forever be in style. Her "signature look" was black slacks along with a black blouse and silver (never gold) jewelry.
She's right about black, at least in my opinion. Lately I've seen quite a few images from runway shows reveling in blacks. From elegance to sheer 'cool,' these styles have caught my eye.
I especially like black paired with silvers and golds, as well as the uprising of sheer fabrics. In any case, I'm fully enjoying these styles.

My sense of style is quite odd, and I often find myself staring at my full closet and not having a single idea about what to wear (and often despising everything I own). I guess my fashion sense is eclectic to say the least: grunge, punk, 60-70's-esque, bohemian, even mildly gothic looks flavor my 'style,' if I even have any (I don't).
However, I'm also incredibly infatuated with home and architectural design. Home style/architectural style is a much more constant beast (for lack of a better word), though if one had the time, money, and creativity, it, too, could be quite changeable.

Lately, I've been quite drawn to a modern/simplistic/minimalistic interior and architectural style, one that stresses (as this post's title suggests) white walls; raw-wood accents, ceilings, or floors; and wide windows opening to greenery, as well as earthy-green touches.

These bookmarks caught my eye immediately. To state the obvious, there is beauty in both nature and simplicity. As someone who has taken to marking her books with sticky-notes for later reference, I can easily imagine my books with a full lawn of these markers in them (my current tome of interest is The China Study by T. Colin Campbell).

In all honesty, the architecture and design of this home-to-be is more or less the epitome of the home-style that I'm talking about. Click the image to view the outside of the house as well as the rest of the interior, as well as the location (it's quite stunning, and very much worth seeing).

The wooden rafters are stunning. Even the door, window frames, and table are stunning in this room, actually.

The moss garden above is an example of one of the 'accents' of this design style, at least for me. It's eccentric– but it's minimalist nonetheless. Simple beauty. This actually reminds me of a terrarium, which (Depending on what exactly one chooses to use as a container) is also aligned with this theme. This union of earth and man– which, generally for me, is just man trying to control the infinite and chaotic beast of beauty that is nature– that soft-yet-borderline-industrial white paired with the natural colors of earth (greens and brouns) generates a feeling of peace, at least within me. And home is peace, or it should be– shouldn't it?

All that aside, I thought I'd finish off this post with this pillow I've discovered on Etsy– Not only could it wittily fit in with this strain of design, it's also just plain, simple fun. It's also a true statement for me.
Bon Soir!Violeusehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03877838883038897817noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-693249992759377794.post-53620453858115773952012-05-30T21:16:00.002-07:002012-06-20T14:24:40.489-07:00One.So here I am, starting over in the blogging world once again. I'm hoping that this time my posting efforts will be successful, as I have been quite neglectful of my original wordpress blog (The Naked Cat). I needed to switch to blogspot though, finally. I've been meaning to do this for a long time. I will most likely transfer my posts (most of them at least) from wordpress to blogspot in order to get this blog off the ground. From there on, I will hopefully develop this seed into a living, breathing beast.
A little about me: I am a tall thing of Mediterranean descent. I can either be neurotic or free spirited. I'm in school to become an actor, I'm originally a dancer, and I am a performer all around (I sing as well). I live and breathe all forms of art. Without it, there is no me.

This blog is a style blog. Not simply fashion: beauty, architecture, art, design, performance, anything. It's a compilation of things that make up how I view the world. I'm eccentric and weird the majority of the time. I have a dark side and a light side. I'll let this blog speak for itself and speak for me personally. Enjoy!Violeusehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03877838883038897817noreply@blogger.com1
